Jason Smith

Principal Naval Architect & MID Manager

MRINA, CEng

Jason joined MID as a Naval Architect with previous experience with RoRo Passenger Ferries, High Speed Ferries, high speed catamarans and luxury superyachts. Jason leads our team and is responsible for delivery of design output across the MID capability including Superyachts, Fishing boats, Ferries, Barges, Work Boats, Naval vessels, Commercial vessels.


Josh Schuwer

Senior Naval Architect

MEng(Hons), MRINA, C.Eng

Josh has 7 years’ experience as a Naval Architect,until moving to MID he was working for Babcock in Rosyth, UK, supporting the construction of Royal Navy vessels including new aircraft carriers. He has experience in structural design, stability investigations and inclines, scantlings and rule application. Josh supports MID commercial activity and also provision of in-service support to the RNZN as part of the Babcock/RNZN contract


Kevin Le Meur

Senior Naval Architect

CPEng MIEAust NER

Kevin has a strong background of 8 years plus in design consultancy with several years in Australia working for the offshore industry. He has extensive experience in structural design to statutory and class regulations. At MID Kevin holds the position of Senior Naval Architect responsible for delivery of projects and design, supporting commercial and Naval design activity.


Matt Cotton - On sabbatical studying for BEng MechEng

Dip Eng (Mech) AMRINA

Matt has a strong background as a project engineer working on large scale international tug and barge transport projects. He is a very competent user of both 2D and 3D CAD packages, and uses his broad and very practical marine project experience, along with his mechanical skills, to develop and produce high quality design solutions and practical outcomes for MID customers.


Kris Decke

Design Engineer

BEng MRINA C.Eng

Kris looks after our Whangarei office where he provides ongoing engineering support to the local shipyards. Kris brings a combination of real world experience onboard international superyachts and a degree in engineering that allows him to produce practical designs that he knows will work onboard the vessel.  Kris is an integral part of our enginering team and responsible for structural and mechanical engineering and design support to larger projects and local shipyards providing design detailing, engineering systems layout design cut files, modelling, including FEA structural analysis of designs.


Jarrod Gibson

Design Draughtsperson and CAD Manager

Jarrod combines a practical hands on boatbuilding apprenticeship with marine design draughting experience from New Zealand and overseas. Jarrod provides design draughting support to the engineering team and uses his practical experience to ensure design solutions are practical and easy to build and maintain in the real world. Jarrod is responsible for structural, mechanical and electrical design draughting in support of our design engineers.


Kevin Bone

Naval Architect

B.Eng Naval Architecture (Hons), B.Des Transport (Hons), AMRINA

Kevin joined MID in Jan 2018 from University after completing his degree in Naval Architecture. Kevin undertakes analysis of stability, structural, seakeeping and general Naval Architectural duties. He is competant in numerical analysis including CFD as well as linear and non-linear FEA.


Ian Pearce

Mechanical Design Engineer

MSc, BSc (Hons), AMIMECHE

Ian has a background in mechanical engineering with Babcock and GKN in the UK. Ian joined MID as a Mechanical Design engineer and brings solid design engineering skills to project and product design. Ian provides mechnical design input to commercial projects including superyachts and to Naval change projects.


Gram Schweikert

Naval Architect/Marine Engineer

MRINA C.Eng

Gram has a background of yacht design in the USA and then fast ferry design in NZ. Gram provides naval architectural consultancy experience in hull design, stability, powering, structural, seakeeping and systems.


Ed Firth

Design Engineer

B.Eng MechEng

Ed has 11 years plus experience in the design and construction of alumiumiun yachts and work boats. Ed has extensive 3D modelling skills and can undertake structural analysis to class rules. Ed works from our Whangarei office suporting design activity at the shipyards and clients in the region and further afield. Also Ed supports our Naval activty in the Devonport dockyard.


Peter Allan - Contracted

Projects Manager

NZR Elect, RTC II MRINA

Peter has many years of experience in marine newbuild and refit/conversion projects including, electrical design and installation on marine projects ranging from workboats and tugs, luxury superyachts and large commercial cargo vessels.  Peter is our Projects Manager looking after the management and control of major projects including assisting clients in the preparation of specifications, tender documents and project control. He is also our senior electrical design engineer responsible for electrical/electronics specification, design, detailing, construction supervision, and project management.
